Nearly $7,000 raised for three-year-old with cancer

Almost $7,000 was raised for a three-year-old boy recently diagnosed with stomach cancer at the second annual Jaffray Charity Golf and Social July 23 at the Olds Highlands Golf Club.

The event was in support of Christian Crowell, a three-year-old boy diagnosed in January with stomach cancer. Although the family has moved to Airdrie, Megan, Christian's mother, was formerly one of the training staff with the Olds Grizzlys.

“They've been longtime friends of mine … and their three-year-old son Christian was diagnosed with stomach cancer and he's just recently been going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments,” said Jason Jaffray, noting that Christian had a chemotherapy treatment on July 19.

More donations were coming in last week, when the Albertan contacted Jaffray.

“Just in the last couple of days the word has got out about how big the golf tournament and stuff was and people have … dropped off $100 cheques personally. It's absolutely incredible the support from the community,” he said.

“The group of people that came out to the golf tournament and social is a lot of friends and family. Once they heard what we were doing and the family we were doing it for, we had incredible sponsors and donations,” he said, noting over 40 companies and individuals donated to the cause. “It was an incredible event.”

About 70 people came out for the golf, while an additional 40 came out to the social afterwards at the Recreation Center.

Jaffray said the inaugural event last year raised money for Deer Meadow School. It was such a success that Jaffray said the plan soon morphed into an annual event that would help out various community groups or families in need.
