OLDS — The Olds Health Care Fundraising Committee has received a multi-million-dollar gift from the estate of Sandra and Darwin Luft to be used for the purchase of equipment at the Olds Hospital and Care Centre.

That announcement was made in a news release. The precise amount of the gift was not disclosed.

A major portion of the gift is being used to create the Luft and Ross Family Hospital Equipment Trust to help ensure that modern equipment is always able to be purchased for the Olds Hospital and Care Centre, the release said.

The remainder of the gift is meant for the purchase of new equipment immediately. Olds hospital leadership staff were expected to determine precisely what that equipment would be.

“The estates of Sandra and Darwin Luft have lovingly ensured that Olds will be looked after for generations to come,” the release said.

“In their estates, they express that the gift is ‘in loving memory of their parents Donald and Jane Luft and William and Dorothy Ross."

“Although, Sandra Luft and her husband, Darwin Luft, who preceded her in death, will never hear the thanks or gratitude from our community, this is exactly the way this humble and generous couple would have wanted it.

“It is the hope of the Olds Health Care Fundraising Committee that the Olds community will rally behind the Luft and Ross families and strive each year to match this growth so that together we can all assure state-of-the-art health care in the Olds community.

“Although the gift itself is on its own incredible, honouring the family and stepping forward with them can make it even more amazing and impactful."

The committee is working on plans for recognition of the gift at the hospital as well as plans on how to best keep everyone informed about the impact of the gift each year.
