Man arrested on bomb threat against Olds RCMP

One teen was in custody last week for allegedly threatening to blow up the Olds RCMP building during a drunken fit while his sober friend, who was supposed to take care of his buddy, was placed behind bars in connection to a later tool-stealing caper.

The bizarre string of events began shortly after midnight on Sept. 23. The two male teens, one 18 years old and the other 19, and both originally from Fairview, were in the downtown area when RCMP confronted them because the 19-year-old was intoxicated.

Police were told by the 18-year-old that he was not drinking that night as he was being the “caregiver” of the other teen and promised to take his friend home safe and sound.

However, the 19-year-old was later picked up by police and taken into custody for public intoxication.

A few hours later a Mountie on patrol noticed a young man behaving “oddly” near the Siesta Motel on 46 Street.

The RCMP officer approached the man and tried to talk to him but a foot chase ensued.

The young man was caught and RCMP determined he was trying to steal items from a welding truck. He had dropped tools during the chase.

Olds RCMP Staff Sgt. Kevin Morton said the alleged culprit, who is 18 years old, was brought back to cells. Morton said the man was not intoxicated.

Meanwhile, RCMP soon linked him to the 19-year-old teen picked up earlier for public intoxication.

At about this time, the 19-year-old intoxicated teen was making demands to see a lawyer. After being denied by RCMP due to his intoxicated state, the man allegedly phoned the police communication centre and made a bomb threat against the Olds RCMP detachment building.

“He was talking about blowing up and destroying the building,” said Morton. “We don't generally give phone calls to people who are drunk. If you are dangerous, violent or grossly intoxicated we may not provide you with access to a phone unless it is safe.”

Charges are pending against both teens.
