OLDS — A presentation on crime given by Olds RCMP underlines the need for more people to join Citizens On Patrol (COP) a town councillor says.

Heather Ryan is council’s representative on the Olds chapter of COP and currently the town’s deputy mayor.

She and a handful of other councillors were among the approximately 30 people who attended the crime presentation, held Jan. 22 in the café at the Olds Auction Mart.

She said the fact that crime rose in 2017, dropped in 2018 and then rose again in 2019 was a surprise to some.

“It just reinforces the need for Citizens on Patrol, which adds an extra set of eyes and ears on the street by patrolling and reporting suspicious activity to the police,” she said in a release.

“I know that driving around patrolling the streets for a few hours late at night doesn’t seem exciting and isn’t for everyone, but it does play an important role in helping to make our community a safer place to live and the more patrols we have the more a deterrent it is to would-be criminals.

“I would encourage citizens interested helping with crime prevention to join the dedicated group of individuals that make up Olds COP.”
