OLDS – A mechanical system failure last week is being cited as a cause to a structural fire call at Seasons Sunrise Village that forced the attendance of local firefighters.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m. on May 22,15 firefighters from the Olds Fire Department responded with Alberta Health Services EMS units to the structural fire call at the supportive living facility, located at 5600 Sunrise Cresent, said Justin Andrew, chief of the Olds Fire Department, in a news release.

Andrew said when firefighters arrived they found part of the building's mechanical system had failed, causing excessive heat to build up within the mechanical room.

Utilizing a shelter-in-place strategy, residents of the private facility were kept in their respective rooms while the situation was managed, said Andrew.

He said building safety systems functioned as designed, and the risk to residents was minimized by quick action and reporting.

Andrew said social distancing and isolation practices were kept in place for the safety of residents and staff, which he added, created additional complex measures to how the situation was best handled.

He said there was no structural damage as a result of the failure, and all smoke and steam was ventilated quickly by the fire department.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident and no occupants required assessment, said Andrew, adding staff and firefighters also conducted wellness checks on all occupants.

He said the cause of this event is not considered suspicious and facility maintenance staff had been activated prior to the resolution of the incident.
