The Innisfail to Olds portion of the wastewater line to Red Deer is expected to begin construction sometime in late summer according to the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission.

The information was shared during an open house on Thursday at the Bowden Friendship Centre.

John VanDoesburg, manager of the project, said the Olds lift station will be constructed over two construction seasons beginning as early as this summer, with the line coming from Bowden being constructed in late spring next year with an expected completion date of October 2012.

Construction on the Innisfail to Bowden portion of the line is expected later this summer, with it being online by fall.

VanDoesburg said once it's determined how well the current Olds wastewater plant is holding up next year, a determination will be made on the allocation of wastewater to be sent to the Red Deer treatment plant from both Olds and Innisfail.

It's expected that wastewater will be pumped from Olds to the treatment plant beginning next fall.

“The Olds lift station is where our major emphasis of development will be (next year),” VanDoesburg said.

The Innisfail to Olds portion of the line was originally scheduled to be the third and final phase of the project, but that was pushed up two years to Phase 2 because both Olds' and Innisfail's current treatment facilities are nearing their capacity.

The line has been engineered for a 25-year time horizon.

Harvey Walsh, the town's representative on the South Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commision, could not be reached for comment last week.
