November 5, 1937 – August 11, 2020

Don was born, raised and educated in the Olds area.  After attending “Tech” (now SAIT) for autobody mechanics, he went on to own and operate Big 2 Body Shop and Olds & Sundre Western Frame & Autobody for 35 years.  Beyond being a means of income, his customers were his friends – everyone – young and old knew “Donnie” Watkins.

On July 15th, 1961, he married high school sweetheart, Inez Challoner.  They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Don will be remembered for his character, love for people and always putting his family and community first.  He demonstrated his love for people through his lifelong passion of volunteering with organizations such as the Olds Fire Dept, Olds Lions Club, Town Councillor, Olds United Church, Olds Grizzlies … among many other forms of service for his community.  Needless to say, Don’s strong integrity and candor shone through in every walk of his life. A sports enthusiast, he loved to golf with his buddies.  Frequently seen attending, cheering and beaming with pride at his grandchildren’s sporting events and numerous other activities.  His daughters and subsequently their kids learned how to be good people not necessarily from his words, but instead, through his actions.  Ultimately, Don was the epitome of leading and teaching by way of conduct.

Don passed away peacefully at his home in Olds.  He is lovingly remembered by his wife Inez; daughters Rhonda (Jim) O’Rourke & Carla (Gary) Czaikowski; grandchildren Alex & Ryan O’Rourke and Carter & Abby Czaikowski; brother in law Murray Mackay; nephew Ian (Gaylene) Mackay; niece Heather (Collins) Hawkins along with a host of cherished friends too numerous to mention. He is predeceased by his father, Harold, mother Laura (Finnie), sister Margaret (Lois) Mackay and nephew Allan Mackay.

Don’s family would to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Joanna Slusar and all the wonderful professionals in Olds and at the PLC who showed such kindness to us all during his illness.  We are beyond thankful. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a private family service was held at the Olds United Church with Reverend Tammy Allan officiating.  Interment followed at the Olds Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Olds United Church Memorial Fund or the Olds Hospital & Care Centre.  Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with arrangements. 403-507-8610  www.heartlandfuneralservices.com
