 March 13, 1924 — March 14, 2023

 Matthew passed away on March 14, 2023, at the age of 99 years in the Innisfail Hospital.

He was born in Calgary to John and Catherine Bates. He grew up on a farm in the Langdon area. In 1942, at the age of 18 years he enlisted in the army and was sent overseas until World War II ended ln 1945.

Upon his return, he farmed, drove school bus and was a custodian for many years in the Chestermere School. In the 1970's he moved to Blue Ridge, Alberta with Jackie where they continued farming and raising cattle. Later they moved to Olds where he worked part time as a truck driver until his retirement. Matthew enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and fishing.

 He was predeceased by his brother Jack Bates; sister Joyce Laycock; stepdaughter Fern Corsiatto and most recently his grandson Guy Boisjoli.

 He is survived by his wife Jacqueline; son Brian (Sylvia); daughters Darlene (Gary) Boisjoli, Gayle (Barry) Howden, and Janet Carr; his extended family Calvin (Robbin), Glen (Cara) and Joy Corsiatto as well as several grandchildren and great grand children.
