Mountain View County council has approved the tender for the Olds-Didsbury airport runway extension project.

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY – Mountain View County council has approved the tender for the Olds-Didsbury airport runway extension project.

The approval came by way of motion at the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

The $510,000 expansion was approved in the 2020 capital budget, with the project being jointly funded by a provincial STIP grant and the Olds Didsbury Flying Association.

Three tenders were received for the project, with the lowest tender submitted by Unsurpassable Construction.

In an effort to reduce the overall cost of the project, operational services came up with an option to reduce the scope of the project, council heard.

“The original design included an access road to be constructed to access the north end of the runway, which would remain for future runway maintenance purposes,” said director of operations Ryan Morrison.

“Removing this from the scope of the project would save approximately $120,000, keeping the project within budget. This does present a challenge in terms of accessing the site for construction, and discussions are underway with the contractor to capture the full impact of this change.”

Council directed administration to enter into the contract with Unsurpassable Construction for the runway extension project within the existing 2020 budget.
