MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County council has approved cost sharing funding for the Olds Aquatic Centre upgrade project totalling $140,083.82.
The OK came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting, with the funding coming from the county’s intermunicipal collaboration reserve.
The aquatic centre upgrade project cost is estimated at $3 million, with the town responsible for $609,060.
Under the intermunicipal collaboration agreement between the municipalities, the Town of Olds had formally requested the county’s share of the upgrade project costs based on the Olds recreation area population split (23 per cent) or $140,083.82.
The project will include the replacement of the facility’s mechanical systems with higher efficiency unit, as well as the replacement of windows and the roof.
“It is anticipated that by making these upgrades, 20 years will be added to the life of this facility,” Town of Olds chief administrative officer Brent Williams said in a letter to the county.
Should the final cost of the project come in less than the $3 million budget, the town would be reimbursed accordingly, he said.
“The $140,083 will be the maximum amount the town will request from the county for this project,” he said. “We are confident that the county sees the value this facility provides to residents of each municipality, in addition to people from across our region.”
The Town of Olds has been approved for a federal grant aimed at climate change and energy efficiency at the centre in the amount of $2,214,764, he said.
