MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY — Dates for a preliminary hearing have been set for the man accused in the suspected homicide of local woman Brenda Ware.
Philip Toner faces one count of second degree murder following a police investigation into the death of Ware, who last spring was found in B.C. in Kootenay National Park roughly 54 kilometres northeast of Radium, B.C. along Highway 93.
B.C. Mounties with Lake Country RCMP eventually caught up with and apprehended Toner, who police previously said has ties to both Alberta and B.C. The accused, who has a history of violent behaviour and domestic abuse, was subsequently transported back to Alberta, where the crime is believed to have occurred.
The untimely passing of Ware, a beloved local hairstylist who was passionate about playing ball, and the circumstances behind her death shocked the community, prompting calls for justice among some.
More than 50 friends and family members attended last fall an unveiling of a memorial bench in her honour at the Greenwood Campground’s community gazebo in Sundre.
According to a media inquiry submitted to Alberta Court Checks by The Albertan, Toner is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Calgary provincial court from Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.
