MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - County council has passed a motion approving a $2 million contribution toward the new Carstairs fire hall project. The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

Carstairs council recently approved the borrowing of $1.6 million toward the project.

The project’s total cost has been pegged at between $4 million, with Mountain View County contributing $2 million and the Town of Carstairs contributing $2 million, including $400,000 from reserves.

The new hall will be located on Mandalay Boulevard, on the town’s east side.

Director of legislative services Chris Atchison told council that the Carstairs ICC (intermunicipal collaboration committee) continues to support that the facility is solely for fire department purposes and is comfortable recommending that it is a 50/50 split (between town and county).

“With that being said, the Town of Carstairs has noted that they are open to amending the final ownership percentage based on the county’s contribution.”

The ICC has met in-camera with two contractors following the request for tenders for the project, with the matter scheduled to come back before Carstairs town council at this week’s council meeting.
