MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - The county's municipal planning commission (MPC) has approved a development permit for a change of use for an existing riding arena in the Bergen rural neighbourhood.

The move came during the approving authority’s recent regularly scheduled meeting, held by teleconference.

The arena is located southwest of the intersection of Twp. Rd. 320 and Rge. Rd. 61, at NE 35-31-6-5.

“The applicant is requesting approval for a proposed change of use for existing riding arena, private, to riding arena, public, on a 139.89 acre parcel zoned agricultural district,” administration said in a briefing note to the commission.

Activities at the arena will including team roping practices and team roping events.

“The application does not include additional events or camping on site. Should the applicants want to host additional events not permitted through issuance of this permit, a new permit will be required either through the public event bylaw or through a new development permit depending on the applicant’s proposal.”

The approval came with a number of conditions, including that all riding arenas and associated facilities “shall be kept in a manner satisfactory to the health authority and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.”

The MCP is the municipality’s approving authority, made up of appointed public members and county councillors.
