Strong man athletes prepare for upcoming car pulls, tire flips

An event that will test the strength of competitors through challenges like pulling a car and lifting river rock has been rescheduled for next month.

Originally set for Sept. 17, the Strong Man Competition is now slated for Oct. 15 at the Sundre & District Aquaplex.

“I didn't get quite enough entries so hopefully this will help,” said event organizer Kelly Dach.

Seven people had registered by the original scheduled date.

To prepare for the Strong Man Competition, athletes spend a couple of months in training, which is the emphasis behind the competition, said the Sundre Aquaplex gym trainer.

“We're here to encourage working out and a healthy lifestyle,” said Dach of the Aquaplex gym's aim.

The Sundre Strong Man Competition main events include single participant competitions such as pulling a car, with the help of a harness, along a set course as well as pair events like the Tire Flips.

In this challenge, the competitor flips a tire for a set amount of time on a set course.

The winner is the team with the athlete who flips the tire the most amount of times in a set time and stays in allotted areas.

Sundre's main events will differ slightly from the typical strong man competitions in some aspects.

In Atlas Stones, there are five round stones of increasing weights, which are positioned in ascending order.

The athlete picks up the lightest weight and places it onto a platform, and continues until all five are on the platforms or until time runs out.

The winner is the athlete who places the most stones onto the platforms in the quickest time.

“We couldn't figure out the stones so we're using river rock,” said Dach.

The Pillars of Strength challenge will also feature a made-in-Sundre twist.

Tree trunks will be used instead of pillars.

The athlete stands with arms extended, gripping handles that restrain the trunks, one on each side, and timing will stop when the athlete is no longer able to hold the weight.

The Giant Farmers Walk will see athletes compete in pairs. Competitors carry a weight in each hand over a marked course as quickly as possible.

“It's all going to be a lot of fun and some different kinds of events for people to watch,” Dach said.

In the Car Pull event, competitors have 75 seconds to pull a car 30 metres.

Also planned for the day is a tug-a-war, cabaret, penny carnival, and beer gardens.
