Waterski champion Ryan Dodd began his season this year on a winning note.

Dodd won the gold medal in men's jump at the Moomba Masters, a prestigious event held March 14 which traditionally opens the professional season.

The Olds native saved his best jump for the final soaring 68.8 metres to finish ahead of Timothy Bradstreet of Australia at 67.1 and Elis Scott of the U.S., in third at 65.3. Dodd's first round jump was 62.4 metres and he completed a 64.9 metre leap in the second round.

Dodd has ranked himself among the world's best jumpers for several seasons. Last year he won the silver medal at the Pan Am Championships and was third at the U.S., Masters. He was ranked second in the world in jump in 2009.

Players coached by Olympic medalists

Ten female hockey players from Olds teams had the chance to improve their skills recently with the help of two Canadian women's hockey champions.

Three hundred minor girls hockey players attended the Scotiabank Girls Hockey Fest March 27 in Calgary.

Olympic gold medalists Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Danielle Goyette teamed up to coach during the event where they were to blend skills training, fun and encouragement to inspire girls to reach for their goals both on and off the ice.
