Spartans take advantage of young Wolverines team

The veteran-laden Olds Spartans football team took full advantage of a young Canmore Collegiate High School Wolverines squad beating the visitors 64-7 on Saturday at Normie Kwong Park.

Despite a slow start in which several scoring plays were called back due to penalties, the Spartans eventually overcame a 7-0 deficit and went into the second half with a commanding 28-7 lead.

The Spartans started off the comeback with about a 60-yard run to the end zone tying it with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Spartans ended it with a short touchdown with less than one minute left in the half.

Defensively, the Spartans were just as impressive, shutting down the Wolverines attack at almost every opportunity, giving themselves excellent field position with which to work.

Following the game, Spartans' coach George Grant said the result boiled down to the Spartans' experience against an inexperienced Wolverines team.

“They've got 15 Grade 9s on their program and we're a veteran-laced team that have been playing together quite a bit. They're well coached and great athletes, they're just lacking the experience,” he said.

Grant said despite the easy victory, he found much to improve upon in the team's game that a more seasoned team would pick apart.

“We were exposed in a number of areas that we have to improve upon if we want to be a better team than we are right now,” he said.

Grant said the Spartans committed several mental mistakes that cost the team points early in the first quarter before they finally got on the scoreboard.

“The (penalty) flags early in the game were nothing more than mental mistakes and as a team we have to clean that up because if we don't, (when) we come up against a team that is stronger or even equal to us, they are absolutely gonna kill us because we can't have those. We had five touchdowns called back…. If you get into a tight game against a bigger school … you can't afford to give up those points,” he said.

Grant said the team would be focusing on eliminating those mistakes before a return match-up in Canmore this Saturday.

“We ourselves are just going to polish up those mental errors and go back to the basics. I'm certain (the Wolverines) are gonna work on their end and I anticipate they're going to be a little bit better,” he said.
