Sinnamon trains under Olympians this winter

Although most of the snow may now be gone, one local skier will not be forgetting the past season anytime soon.

Jade Sinnamon, a 10-year-old Spruce View School student, had the opportunity to attend a ski camp with some of Canada’s best this winter.

Sinnamon was one of the lucky girls who got to train under recent Olympic medalist Jennifer Heil at a ski camp just for girls that Heil started after the Olympics.

The camp spanned a whole weekend in Jasper where girls ages eight and up got to learn moguls and freestyle skiing, and spend time with an Olympic athlete.

Around 50 girls attended the camp that is free to all participants. Not only did the girls get to learn from Heil but also another past Olympian, Kristi Richards, another teammate and two of their coaches.

Sinnamon said the experience was “really cool” for her and the other girls and that one of the highlights was just being able to spend time with the Olympians and get all of the gear signed.

Sinnamon said one of the things Heil talked to them about was working hard and said that it is not always just about the gold medal

Hitting the jumps is one of her favourite parts of skiing, said Sinnamon, who normally trains with the Central Alberta Ski Association based out of Canyon Ski Hill in Red Deer.

Sinnamon started skiing when she was about eight-years-old and is looking forward to the summer training when she is going to start training on jumps that go into the water, enabling skiers to practice over the warmer months.

After competing in several competitions this year, Sinamon said she will definitely be going to the camp again next season and hopes to one day follow in the footsteps of the likes of Heil and her Olympic teammate.
