OLDS — The Olds Koinonia Christian School (OKCS) Royals won silver in the 1A senior boys basketball championship, held March 17-19 in Pincher Creek.

The Royals went on an impressive run, beating no. 3-ranked Clearwater Academy of Calgary, and no. 2-ranked St. Michael’s Catholic School of Pincher Creek before bowing to Coaldale Christian School, 67-55 in the final.

“We were able to win zones and went on a pretty crazy run,” head coach OKCS Ken Taks said Monday.

Taks said the Royals’ strategy was pretty effective as they upset Clearwater and St. Michael’s.

“We played, very, very fast and we tired them out, I think,” he said. “We changed defensive schemes continually, all game long – almost every possession – and just surprised everybody with how well we shot the ball.”

Although Coaldale Christian School prevailed in the final, Taks was pleased with how close it was.

“It was a good game,” he said.
