OLDS — Local throwing athlete and coach Rachel Andres is not only planning to compete in the last couple of meets in the season, she’ll be organizing them as meet director.

Three smaller meets in Calgary (involving about 20 athletes instead of 400 or more) have been scheduled to wind up the season.

One was held recently and the other two will be held Aug. 27 and Sept. 24.

In an email, Andres outlined the duties of a meet director.

“It means I put the meet together, get the officials, handle the entries, book the track, make the heat sheets, and put the results in after,” she wrote.

“I got thrown into it unexpectedly last year when the meet director had something come up. So I’ve done one last year. And now two this year.

“(I) figured out ways to make the process simpler this year and with it just being a throws meet, it isn’t too labor intensive.

“There’s a need for more meets later in the summer and becoming a meet director was the best way to fill that need.

“As I get better at this, I’ll direct more meets throughout spring and fall when no other meets are being offered in Alberta.”
