OLDS — Sammy Fraser, the new head coach of the Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team, is bringing home a medal from the 2022 Canada Summer Games, but not the one she was looking for.

Fraser was head coach of the Team Alberta women's volleyball team, which fought valiantly, but were ultimately defeated by Team Manitoba, the reigning Canada Games champions, in four sets (25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-10) in the women's volleyball gold medal game in Thorold, Ont.

Prior to the gold medal game, Alberta had been perfect, with pool play victories over Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and British Columbia.

They took out Nova Scotia in the quarterfinals and beat Saskatchewan again in the semifinals.

The women's volleyball Broncos will open their 2022-23 season with a doubleheader at the Ralph Klein Centre against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks, with the home opener set for Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. and the back end of the doubleheader the following afternoon at 1 p.m.
