OLDS — The COVID-19 virus has crushed the chance for the Olds College Broncos men’s and women’s futsal teams to compete in the 2020 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships.

Those championships were slated to be held March 13-15 at Lakeland College in Lloydminster.

But they’ve been postponed until further notice as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Futsal is a variation of soccer, but played indoors.

Niels Slotboom, head coach of both Broncos teams, says he and his players are disappointed by the decision, because they had made great strides during the season.

“I would have said that both teams were coming in (to the championships) in a very strong position. So it’s definitely going to be very disappointing if we try and can’t show that off,” he said Thursday.

But Slotboom understands that the decision had to be made.

“I mean, most of the people that are on our team are not really going to be badly affected by it but you know, it’s all about the people that are around you, and who are at home and in the community. So you can never be too careful,” he said.

“I mean it’s everywhere, right? Like every big league in the sports world is pretty much closing down. So it’s not surprising, but it doesn’t make it any less disappointing.

“It’s postponed, not permanently cancelled. So they are hoping one way or another they can reschedule it at some time,” he added.
