OLDS – Former Olds resident Andreas Troschke won a gold medal during the Canada Summer Games.
The Games, held in the Niagara region in Ontario, began Saturday, Aug. 6 and wrapped up Sunday, Aug. 21.
Troschke won gold in the men’s hammer throw, a specialty of his when he lived in Olds and when he moved a few years ago down to Lethbridge to go to university.
In an email, Team Alberta media liaison Marianne Portelance noted that Troschke won a bronze medal during the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. This time, he was determined to switch that to a gold medal.
“I feel good now. After the competition was over, I didn’t feel great because I didn’t throw as far as I wanted to. But saying that, I still have a medal around my neck, which makes me feel a little bit better,” he said.
“I’m one of the few people that is lucky enough to have the opportunity to do two Canada Summer Games; this is my second one, so I traded bronze for gold, which has been a really good feeling.”
In the end, Team Alberta finished the Games with a total of 111 medals: 35 gold, 33 silver and 43 bronze, good for fourth place. Ontario finished on top with 198 medals: 86 gold, 60 silver and 52 bronze.
As a result of its performance, Team Alberta received the Centennial Cup, which goes to the province showing the greatest improvement in the final standings in comparison to the previous Canada Games (summer to summer and winter to winter).
Alberta also won that award during the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.
