Two local rodeo contestants had big results at the recent Broncs and Honky Tonks Rodeo in Medicine Hat.

There were three area competitors – Innisfail’s Kyle Daines in saddle bronc riding, Bowden’s Dustin Tompkins in bull riding and Sydney Daines, also from Innisfail, in ladies barrel racing.

Sydney completed her ride with a second place finish and with a time of 12.83 seconds. She came home with a cheque of $1,650. Unofficially she remains in the top 10 Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) rankings.

This current season is her first as a professional, and her second place finish in Medicine Hat is her top result. As an amateur the 15-year-old Grade 9 Innisfail Junior Senior High School student had nine first place results.

“I thought we did really well in Medicine Hat, especially on a young horse,” said the young barrel racer.

She has her sights set on a first place finish at the Leduc Rodeo on April 28, adding that she continues to train hard.

“We ride a lot in the field but we have given the horses a break in the winter,” she said.

Kyle Daines competed but was bucked off his ride.

Tompkins, 25, placed fourth in his competition with a score of 80 points. He took home $725.99, and figures he is at least sixth in the current top 10 CPRA rankings.

He said he was pleased with his result in Medicine Hat, noting there were good bulls and riders he was competing against.

“I expected to finish either third or fourth,” he said. “There were older bulls around, which is good because I kind of figured what to expect. Everything went good.”

He said he will compete in the bull riding competition in Trail, B.C. on April 30, as well as at the Leduc Rodeo from April 28 to May 1, and the Coleman Rodeo from April 29 to May 1.
