Cyclones Take Down Defending Champs

The No. 1-ranked Cyclones Football team remain unbeaten on the season after defeating defending champions Red Deer Steelers 44-28 Thursday night at Great Chief Park.

The No. 1-ranked Cyclones Football team remain unbeaten on the season after defeating defending champions Red Deer Steelers 44-28 Thursday night at Great Chief Park.

The Mighty Cyclones improve their league record to 5-0 on the season now being the only undefeated team in Central Alberta.

The Cyclones scored the game's first touchdown but the Steelers lashed back scoring immediately on the kick return. The two teams battled back and forth and, at the end of the first half, both teams were even with two touchdowns a piece.

"We came out extremely flat in the first half," said Cyclone head coach Wally Genz. "We had three touchdowns not count due to penalties which took away our momentum."

The Cyclones regrouped at half and came out firing on all cylinders with Thomas Layden scoring a touchdown off the opening kickoff. The Cyclone defence shut down all attempts thanks to the efforts of Cole "Train" Martin, Wyat Hoffman, Darian "Dizzy" Davis, and rookie sensation Drake Caron.

League touchdown leader Jeremy Klessens continued his hot streak with two touchdowns as did the running back phenom Elek "Bull" Himer who added two more touchdowns to his stats. Quarterback Austin Thompson was a nearly perfect 16-for-17 for 60 yards and ran in a touchdown.

The Cyclones play their last regular season game October 15th against the Olds Huskies. Game time starts at 11:00am.
