The Olds High School senior girls volleyball team was defeated in the quarter-final match at the annual Spartan Smash on Friday and Saturday. The Spartans lost to the Lacombe Rams in straight sets 15-25, 23-25.

The Spartans got to the playoffs by finishing third in their six-team pool, splitting sets with Rimbey Composite High School 25-18, 21-25, beating Drumheller Composite High School 25-20, 25-18, losing to Frank Maddock High School 16-25, 22-25, beating Bow Valley High School 25-20, 25-11 and splitting sets with Brooks Junior Senior High School 13-25, 25-23.

Wanda Vandervelden, the team's coach, said while the team did show some inconsistency during the tournament, at other times the team played well. She said any time the Spartans get to play other 3A schools in the zone, that is going to benefit it as the Spartans advance in the season. She said building and keeping the team's confidence up will be a key part of any success the team has.

“Any time we can play strong 3A teams, that's going to help us,” she said.

The team is travelling to Strathmore this weekend to square off against other South Central zone opponents. Mountain View County league action will resume on Nov. 5 against the Cremona Cougars.

The Lacombe Rams won the tournament, defeating the H.J. Cody Lakers from Sylvan Lake in three sets.
