The Penhold Amazons are heading to the second round of playoffs after defeating the Calgary Warriors 6-2 on March 3.
The win was the Amazons' second against the Warriors in a best-of-three series. The Amazons will have to get past the Lethbridge Jr. Eagles before they can proceed to the finals, the same second round matchup as last year's south division playoffs. The winner will head to the finals against the north division winner.
Though the score against the Warriors shows a decisive win, co-coach Annette Jensen said the game didn't start out that way.
“We struggled in the first. They came out hard,” Jensen said. The Amazons, who were the visiting team, picked it up in the second and third periods.
“It was definitely a team effort to come back from behind,” Jensen said, explaining that while the Amazons found the net first, the Warriors put two behind the goal line before the Amazons scored again.
While the Amazons beat the Eagles last year to claim their spot in the finals there's no guarantee this playoff round will be the same.
“They're definitely a good team,” Jensen said of the upcoming opponent. During regular season play, the Amazons lost both games they played while visiting the Eagles but won both games they played while hosting. It's a challenge the players are looking forward to.
“They're excited for this weekend,” Jensen said.
The Amazons and Eagles face off at the Penhold Regional Multiplex on March 10 at 5:30 p.m. Both teams travel the next day to Lethbridge to hit the ice at Adams Ice Centre for a 3 p.m. game, meaning the series could be over by Sunday evening if one team wins both games.
