Red Deer County has been deemed eligible for disaster assistance due to a severe windstorm on July 7 that produced three tornadoes in the region.The county's application to have costs recovered will be reviewed in the next few weeks by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency.The review is part of a plan by the Alberta government to spend $34.2 million to help residents, small businesses, agricultural producers and municipalities across the province recover uninsurable losses from extreme weather this summer.Red Deer County's allocation would come from $450,000 available to it, the County of Vermilion River and the Municipal District of Wainwright to cover cleanup and emergency operations costs.ìWind damage is typically something that's insurable for residents and small businesses. This program is only for the municipality Ö (and) the program is based on uninsurable damage,î he said.Rick Henderson, director of disaster services with Red Deer County, said the application involves cleanup costs from downed trees on Cottonwood Road and Rge. Rd. 21. No county structures were damaged by the windstorm.ìThe road was completely impassable after that for several miles because of all the trees that were down on it,î he said.Mountain View County was not approved for funding under these programs. It did receive funding for flooding that occurred earlier this spring.
