CARSTAIRS - Three cross country runners from Hugh Sutherland School recently participated in the Alberta High School provincial championships in Medicine Hat and did very well.

Aiden Good reached the podium with a bronze medal finish in intermediate boys, Belle Piche finished 12th in junior girls, and Sophie Porter placed 26th in senior girls.

Coaching the team were Sharon Styles-Hamm, Willie Vass and Jenny Johnson.

"The season came to an incredible end after a beautiful day in Medicine Hat at the ASAA (Alberta Schools Athletic Association) provincial championships," said Johnson. "Watching these amazing athletes run tenaciously and work with coaches Styles-Hamm and Vass is a season highlight."

The week before the Kodiaks team captured the South Central zone championship in Okotoks with five athletes winning medals, four qualifying for provincials, and 10 athletes finishing in the top 10 in their respective divisions.

"We had our best performance in 22 years," said Johnson. "Our athletes won because of their hard work ethic and willingness to feel uncomfortable on course.

"They ran their hearts out and emptied their gas tanks! We are very excited to hang our zone banner and hope there are more to come."
