Ag tour planning

The Alberta Agricultural Service Board summer 2017 tour of Red Deer and Mountain View county farms and other facilities will hopefully break even in terms of costs, says Duncan Milne.

The Alberta Agricultural Service Board summer 2017 tour of Red Deer and Mountain View county farms and other facilities will hopefully break even in terms of costs, says Duncan Milne.

A Mountain View County (MVC) councillor and member of the county's agricultural service board, Milne is representing MVP on the ad hoc committee overseeing planning for the two-county tour.

Last month MVC councillors approved a motion supporting co-hosting the tour with Red Deer County and providing funding up to $50,000.

The tour will see representatives from agricultural service boards and other stakeholders from across the province visit agriculture facilities in both counties.

“The event is to tour innovative ideas in agriculture in the area,” said Milne. “We'd like to have Olds College involved in this because they are an agriculture college.

“Benefits to the counties will include bringing people into the counties to see what we are doing here, and it will benefit the college by opening it up for more people to see about what is going on at the college.

“We want to look at different ag operations and how they are making ag benefit their farms. Hopefully we are not going to lose money on this thing. We are looking to maybe come out of this on a break-even point.”

Although exact dates for the tour have not been set, Milne says it may echo past tours that were held in mid-summer.

“Traditionally it is dated in the first and second week in July and we will probably stick to those dates, but we haven't come up with any firm dates,” he said.

Organizers are expecting about 400 delegates, he said.

Work is underway to come up with a preliminary budget for the tour, he said.

Agricultural service boards are formed by rural municipalities to provide input and information to councils on agricultural related issues and concerns.
