Town clean-up organizers looking for volunteers

With spring looming just around the next ice-covered corner, the Town of Innisfail community services department is encouraging residents to start thinking green.

The town is launching a spring clean-up initiative that is aimed at bringing residents together and at making Innisfail a more environmentally friendly community this year.

There will be an educational component to the initiative beginning in April with the actual clean-up events occurring from May 15 to June 4.

The town staff is sending out a call to action for community members who are interested in taking a roll in the spring clean-up.

They currently need people to assist in the managing and organizational aspects of the clean-up, contacting and rallying neighbourhoods, promoting the event, assisting with logistics of the BBQ kick-off and wind-up, and networking partnerships to assist in the educational campaign and clean-up.

Many communities in Alberta participate in spring clean-ups every year and an event of this nature has shown to bring people together to provide a sense of pride and community belonging, said Denise Bouw, a program specialist with the Town of Innisfail in a press release.

While the project is still in its development stages the mandate has been centered around a number of the community values identified by Envision Innisfail such as being green and environmentally responsible, and making Innisfail a place where people feel healthy and safe.

The spring clean-up is planned to be coordinated with an adopt-a-park program although the details of this have not yet be finalized.

In previous years the wildlife fish and game has held a annual highway cleanup and the town holds a hazardous waste round up but this is one of the first times the town has held a community wide clean-up.

Volunteer information and more information about the clean up can be found by contacting the town office.
