Three teens arrested for robbery

One of three teens charged in last week’s robbery of a 24 hour gas station and convenience store in Innisfail is scheduled to appear in court this week.

One of three teens charged in last week’s robbery of a 24 hour gas station and convenience store in Innisfail is scheduled to appear in court this week.

The 15 year-old Innisfail resident, who cannot be named under young offender laws, is facing charges of robbery with violence, and using a disguise with intent.

The teen has also been charged with breech of an undertaking. Innisfail RCMP Cpl. Rochelle Becker said he had been released with conditions for a different matter.

A 16 year-old and an 18 year-old also charged in the store robbery were to make their first appearance in court last Thursday, three days after being nabbed by police.

Early last Tuesday morning, police say three males wearing disguises entered the gas station and convenience store where one employee was on staff.

One of the males immediately assaulted the employee while the two others loaded cigarettes from behind the counter into bags, according to police.

The employee reportedly sustained injuries that did not require medical attention.

Becker said a firearm was not used and added police would not be releasing what was used in the altercation.

“The weapon wasn’t a primary weapon of assault,” she further clarified, adding police did not want to jeopardize the case by releasing the type of weapon.

The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle and the employee called 911 to report an assault and robbery, according to police.

Two Innisfail RCMP members and two Innisfail integrated traffic services members responded to the call at approximately 4 a.m.

“They arrived on scene and began an investigation that promptly led them to arrest the young fellows,” said Becker.

She said the suspects were apprehended within an hour after police began their investigation.

Police did not release the name of the gas station that had been robbed.

“The reason being, we’d hate to have someone target it again,” said Becker.

Officials with the gas station and convenience store declined to comment.

The two other Innisfail males charged in the robbery were to appear in Red Deer court last Thursday.

Thomas Hanger, 18, has been charged with robbery with violence, using a disguise with intent and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The Innisfail teen was remanded into custody after being arrested.

The third suspect, a 16 year-old male who cannot be named under young offender laws, has been charged with robbery with violence and using a disguise with intent.
