The former owner of the land around the Penhold Regional Multiplex was the successful bidder to rent the land back.

Cornelis (Casey) den Boer was the successful bidder after the Town of Penhold put approximately 60 to 65 acres up for tender.

“We only had one bid for the land rental,” said Mayor Dennis Cooper. The next step is to put together a contract.

The land he'll be renting, along with the land the multiplex now sits on, was expropriated from den Boer by the Town of Penhold in 2008.

The final steps to conclude the process of paying den Boer for the expropriated land took place earlier this year.

Cooper said council believes den Boer will use the land for farming.

“We assume he might be cropping it,” Cooper said.

When asked why there was only one bidder, Cooper said one other person had meant to bid but missed the deadline.

Eventually the land could be used for sports fields around the multiplex, Cooper said. He added they can never put buildings on the land.

“It's on a flood plain,” Cooper said.

Den Boer did not return a call for comment before press time.
