Million-dollar Innisfail road construction contract approved

INNISFAIL - A Red Deer company has been awarded the million-dollar contract for five local road surface improvements that will be made through out the town this year.

Following an administration report at town council’s regular meeting on Feb. 28, Red Deer’s Border Paving Ltd. was awarded the $999,745 contract for the local infrastructure project over three higher bids.

The total estimated cost for the completed work is $1,161,034, which also includes engineering, testing and a 10 per cent contingency. This cost is under the estimated project budget of $1,232,000.

The road surface improvements project will be funded from the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative and Federal Gas Tax Fund.

The project’s five road sections that require surface improvements include:

• 46th Avenue which had the underground utilities replaced in 2021 and requires the millings to be removed, shaping and pavement.

• 53rd Avenue which had the underground utilities replaced in 2021 and requires the millings to be removed, shaping and pavement.

• 42nd Street from 51st Avenue to 52nd Avenue requires a mill and overlay with minor curb and sidewalk replacements.

• 50th Street North Service Road from 45th Avenue to 48th Avenue requires a mill and overlay with minor curb replacements and installation of catch basins to
improvement drainage.

• 52nd Avenue from 52nd Street to 53rd Street and 52nd Street from 50th Avenue to 48AAvenue requires a mill and overlay with 50 per cent of the curb and sidewalk needing replacement.

Council was told administration will work with Tagish Engineering on additional communication with the impacted residents as the project progresses later this year.

Council unanimously approved the contract to Border Paving Ltd.
