Miller nominated for child care excellence award

An Innisfail child care provider is among 40 professionals from across the province selected as finalists for an award of excellence in child care.

Tammy Miller was selected out of over 125 nominations for the 2011 Alberta Child Care Professional Awards of Excellence offered through the Children and Youth Services department of the provincial government.

An awards ceremony will be held in Calgary on April 8 where 12 of the nominees will be honoured.

"I am a little overwhelmed by (the nomination) and it is a huge surprise but it is great," said Miller.

Nominees were judged on a number of criteria including how they support children's development and well-being and how they nurture the individuality of each child.

The way they engage with parents, families and communities as partners in the care and education of children was also assessed.

The selection committee also looked at how nominees raise the profile of the early learning and child care field through ongoing learning and development, and a willingness to share knowledge with others.

The Innisfail mother operates the Innisfail School Age Program on 42 St. and has 20 years experience as a child care provider.

"I have been running the program for 15 years and I just like the kids - it's all about them," Miller said.

She was nominated by parent Susan Roy.

"I can't say enough about what a hugely valuable service that Tammy and her team provide to the community of Innisfail and surrounding area," Roy said in her nomination.

Miller has been caring for Roy's son Paul for the past six years.

"Ms. Miller has created such an outstanding child care environment that in his early years he preferred to got to 'Tammy's' on non-school days than to stay with friends or family members."

Roy said each child in Miller's care is welcomed with open arms and encouraged to join in group activities that help develop the child and ensure their well being.

She approaches every situation with a smile and kindness, added Roy.

Janine Durette says Miller was big part of why her daughter Rowan's transition to Innisfail was so positive when they first moved there.

"Tammy welcome Rowan completely and fully to her school age program, making sure she always felt like she belonged there. She made sure to include Rowan every morning in whatever activity she was doing with the children.

Roy and Durette applauded Miller's willingness to foster values and individuality in their children.

"Tammy allows Rowan to help out with the younger children which builds Rowan's confidence and self assurance," said Durette.

Another mother said Miller provides activities that help the kids learn practical skills such as sharing, problem solving, kindness, and manners.

"Overall she has created a positive atmosphere for children," said Shelley Sauter.

She added that Miller is a child care advocate and advocates for the creation of child care spaces, subsidies, and overall recognition of the profession.

Miller is currently seeking accreditation for her program and has a very thorough checklist employees must suffice before they are left alone to tend to the children, said Roy.

"To be able to go to work and know that your child is safe and well cared for, nurtured, fed nutritious snacks and engaged in healthy and positive activities makes it possible for me to do my job without worrying about Paul," Roy concluded.
