INNISFAIL – The spirit of Christmas was alive in Innisfail as the community gathered for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The event took place across from the Innisfail Royal Canadian Legion on Nov. 16, and returned to downtown after a four-year absence.

“We did something about four years ago on Main Street but it was really small and really cold,” said Gavin Bates, town councillor. “I believe it will become an annual event and I do believe it will grow just like other events.”

The tree lighting ceremony also included live music from the Central Alberta Chamber Players, Christmas carolling and a visit from Santa Claus.

Innisfail mayor Jim Romane first proposed the idea of a Christmas Tree lighting event to council at a recent meeting.

“Something I've wanted to see in the downtown revitalization was to get a Christmas tree. It was a unanimous (decision),” said Romane.

"It's a great way to kick off the holiday season," he added. "It’s good for the community and for the local stores.”

The event was held in conjunction with Innisfail’s Hometown Christmas, an annual event presented in partnership by the Innisfail and District Chamber of Commerce, the Parent Link Centre, the Innisfail Lions Club and the Town of Innisfail.

“This is our sixth year doing Hometown Christmas. The event keeps getting bigger and bigger,” said Carla Gabert, chamber manager. “We have events going now from 7 o’clock in the morning until about 9 o’clock at night.”

The day's festivities included visits with Santa, horse-drawn wagon rides, cookie decorating, craft making and the Festival of Lights at the Anthony Henday Campground, she noted.

“We do appreciate everyone coming out and appreciate the support of our local businesses and the community,” she said.

Jenny Sheddy and her family were one of many out enjoying the Christmas tree lighting on Saturday.

“I think it’s a fantastic way for families to get together, meet new people and listen to some music,” said Sheddy. “I think for sure they should make it an annual tradition and make it bigger and better every year.”
