INNISFAIL – Half-year building permit statistics for 2022 is showing Innisfail is performing just under 2021 totals for the same period.

The half-year statistics were presented to town council at its regular meeting on July 25.

For the first six months of 2022 the town recorded a total of 29 building permits with a construction value of $5,007,067. In 2021, the value of the total 36 building permits issued in the first six months was $5,600,234. For all of 2021, the town issued 84 building permits with a total construction value of $10,861,559.

“Overall, we're sitting at about half of what we did last year at the halfway point,” said Meghan Jenkins, the town’s director of community services, who presented the 2022 half-year figures to town council. “Permit numbers are down, and we're not seeing, if you look at the renovations - both in residential and commercial - the number of permits there. And we're not seeing the typical number of garages and decks and those types of projects.

“I think just with the cost of materials people are going to wait and see if there's a change there.”

In 2021, the town recorded 44 building permits with a total construction value of $876,013 for garages, decks, renovations and demolitions. This year at the half way point for garages, decks, renovations and demolitions the town has issued 10 building permits worth $163,125.

While the number and value for low density residential building permits for 2022 is about the same as last year’s first six months, the town is lagging far behind this year with commercial permits compared to 2021.

For the first six months of 2021 the town recorded three commercial building permits with a construction value of $2,725,580. During the same time this year, the town issued seven building permits with a total value of $276,000. For the entire 2021 year, the town issued 14 commercial building permits with a value of $4,682,728.

However, the town is doing much better in 2022 with industrial building permit values compared to 2021.

For all of 2021, the town issued five industrial building permits with a total value of $543,800. For the first six months of 2022 the town has also issued five permits but the total value is $2,247,816.
