INNISFAIL – A 26-year-old man has died in custody at the Bowden Institution and Innisfail RCMP is now assisting the medical examiner with the investigation, officials said.

Logan Mitchell died at the facility, located north of Bowden, on Thursday, Aug. 6. The cause of death has not been released.

Mitchell was serving a three year, one month sentence for failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

“Whenever there is a death (of a serving inmate) we do attend and we do assist as an investigative agency for the medical examiner’s office,” said Innisfail RCMP Staff Sgt. Chris Matechuk.

Innisfail RCMP officers did attend at the Bowden Institution following Mitchell’s death, he said.

As with all cases involving the death of an inmate in custody, Correctional Service Canada is now reviewing the circumstances of Mitchell’s death.
