A food drive in support of the Innisfail Food Bank has started up at Kevin's Nofrills store and will run until May 5.

The drive is meant to help books number of non-perishables at the local bank, which typically sees a dip in the spring when donations from the holiday season start to deplete.

“We believe we have a responsibility to help in the fight against hunger in the Innisfail community,” says Kevin Meyer, store owner, Kevin's Nofrills store. “We know that food and funds are needed and with the support and generosity of our customers and colleagues we know we can make a difference for those in need at the Innisfail Food Bank.”

the most needed non-perishable items include peanut butter or nuts, baby food, canned fruits and vegetables, canned fish or meat and beans. Other needed items include pasta and sauce, rice, whole grain cereals and aseptic packaged powdered or canned milk.

One hundred per cent of food donations and 85 per cent of cash donations will go directly to Innisfail Food bank while the remaining 15 per cent of donated cash will support provincial food bank programs.

The local food drive is part of a larger national food drive that includes all of the corporate and franchise store banners. In 2011 customers raised more than $1.4 million in funds and 1.5 pounds of food for food banks across the country. This year, with the community's support and generosity, we hope to raise $1.2 million in funds and 1.2 million pounds of food.
