INNISFAIL – Firefighters were kept busy last weekend responding to a house blaze and then a serious motor vehicle accident.

The Town of Innisfail said in a news release that on the morning of Oct. 2, firefighters from the Innisfail Fire Department responded to a residential structure on an acreage that was located two kilometres from town.

The news release said the fire severely damaged the property but there were no injuries reported, said a fire department spokesperson.

To extinguish the fire, Innisfail firefighters sought and received the assistance of neighbouring fire departments from Red Deer County, Spruce View, and Bowden. The cause of the blaze is considered to be accidental, said an Innisfail Fire Department spokesperson.

Later that morning, while still on scene and with the fire under control, Innisfail firefighters received reports of a serious two-vehicle motor vehicle accident at the intersection of highways 54 and 2A, said the news release.

Fire crews from Innisfail, Spruce View, and Bowden responded and assisted with the extrication of a Blackfalds male and female from a SUV.

The news release said one of the individuals in the SUV was determined to be in serious condition and was airlifted from the scene by STARS air ambulance. The driver of the other vehicle, a truck with a trailer from Calgary, sustained minor injuries.

Highway 54 was closed for a period of time to provide a landing site for the air ambulance and for subsequent investigations by a RCMP traffic analyst, said the new release.
