Innisfail Golf Club members teed off for the 2012 club championship August 18 and 19 in the yearly quest for local dominance in a variety of categories.

This year there were some foregone conclusions, but some surprises as well.

“We had a new guy emerge on the men's side,” said head pro Jim Boomer, of Kyle Neilson, who took home the men's club champion award and was named overall club champion. “He's been really working on his game. He proved he was a better player than we thought.”

Larry Oxtoby won the title of senior men's low net champion, Jace Ouellette was crowned junior club champion and Courtney Dickson became junior girls club champion.

Consistent performer Gary Oxtoby really made an impression at this outing.

“He's always been a good player here,” Boomer said. “But he really played well at this particular event.”

Every golfer experiences ups and downs in their golf game, but Janet Mackenzie really came out guns blazing this time, snagging senior ladies club champion distinction.

“Sometimes you come into orbit at the right time,” Boomer said.

Other triumphant golfers included Courtney Dickson, junior girls club winner Courtney Dickson, ladies low net winner Carolyn Tulluch, and men's low net winner Jason Oxtoby.

Cara Vanderham, who's leaving town on a golf scholarship, was expected to play well and did, walking away with the lady club champion and overall ladies club champion honours.

“Her game is on another level and probably only going to get better,” Boomer said.
