Five Things to do Around Alberta This Week - Part XVII

When the older kids are in school and you are at home with a toddler, or if you are a daycare/day home worker looking for things to do with very young children, this installment of this series is just for you!
52 HSG - 5 Things

Visit Dinny in Calgary

Toddlers love interactive things, big cuddly animals, and colourful displays. So, what better way to pass an afternoon than at the zoo? In Calgary, timed entry is no longer required, however patrons aged 2 and up are required to wear a mask in all indoor exhibits and facilities. Calgary Zoo is also pleased to open the Brawn Family Foundation Dinny’s Green. Thanks to the generosity of the Brawn family, the Dinny’s project is complete and families can gather and play in the green space surrounding Dinny the dinosaur.

Play with cats in Edmonton

So, your toddler wants a kitty, but you are not committed to getting a pet. What can you do? The answer is the Cat Café on Whyte. Here mom or dad can enjoy a coffee in the cat-free area before taking the little one to the lower lounge (ages 6 and under must stay in the lower lounge) to play with friendly cats and kittens. Cat Café takes care of rescue cats for SAFE. All the cats are adoptable, although just playing with them is an option if you are not ready to take one home. Either way, you are in for a paw-sitively great time!

Step into a fairy tale, Dickson

The Danish Canadian Museum explores the history of Danish settlers in Canada. The grounds include the Children’s Garden of Imagination where kids can act out their favourite fairy tales. The garden is inspired by the many works of Danish author Hans Christian Anderson. When the little one is tuckered out from the garden, stop in and try something new, like dansk pølse, at the Saga Café.

Make a splash, Whitecourt

Rotary Park in Whitecourt is home to a great splash park with interactive elements for a variety of ages. There is also a great playground, fishing, and the Whitecourt River Slides on site. At Rotary Park, it’s easy to spend a full day of fun with your little one.

Buzz on down to Fahler

If you are near Fahler, Alberta, take your little one to see the world’s largest bee. This one won’t sting – it sits atop a pole surveying the area as the mascot for the “honey capital of Canada.” While the annual Fahler Honey Festival is cancelled for 2021, consider making the trip next year to Fahler when (hopefully) the sweet celebration is back on.
