With all the recent changes in daily life, people are starting to get a bit restless.

With the kids back to school, what about the adults? Lifelong learning and professional development look a little different this year, but it is still going on. Now is a great time to take on some professional development opportunities you have been wanting to try, or just learn something new for the fun of it. The benefits are as great as ever!

Lifelong learning

Taking courses in things of interest, for the knowledge, or just for the fun of it is a great idea. The brain needs exercise, and people need challenges. Feel the excitement, build confidence and see what those around you are doing with their time. Too much home alone time can be very demotivating, which makes right now a very good time to start networking and rediscovering what is out there.

Professional Development

Now is a great time to take some work-related courses that will help to set goals for the future and motivate changes in your work life. It might be the time to change your careers, or to turn your hobby or side income into a career. With the pandemic forcing new ideas and new ways of thinking out of everyone, those staying at home are seeking unique ways to earn income or deliver services. Professional development opportunities now will be a big help in the future.

Put the change in your favour

Taking classes, whether they are for work, for personal interest, or just for fun can help adults adapt to changes. There have been a lot of changes, and there will be more in the future. Getting involved in any kind of learning will help with adaptations so that the change is in your favour.

Where to find the opportunities

There are opportunities everywhere, even though the face-to-face ones are fewer at the moment. The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension is one place to start.

  • Check with the public library in your area. They offer learning classes and can point you in the right direction to find more, or to help you find what interests you.
  • Sign up to email lists to keep updated on changes and re-openings.
  • Join online classes and check with local school districts to see what is offered now and in the future.
