DIDSBURY - A late-night fire destroyed a home and killed a number of pets at a residence in northeast Didsbury on March 30.

Didsbury firefighters were dispatched to the home at 21 Valarosa at about 10:30 p.m., says Didsbury Fire Department Chief Curtis Mousseau.

“Although the efforts of the crew prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring residences, the house was a total loss,” said Mousseau. “All occupants were able to evacuate the house safely. While a dog was rescued, unfortunately other pets perished in the fire.”

Carstairs firefighters were also initially dispatched to the scene, with Olds firefighters subsequently called in to assist due to the size and intensity of the fire.

“Crews immediately initiated a defensive attack, including protecting neighbouring residences, to combat the fire,” he said.

The fire was brought under control by 11:30 p.m. Didsbury Fire Department members remained on the scene until 2 p.m. Thursday for fire watch and to extinguish hot spots as required.

In all, 31 personnel and nine apparatus, including aerial spray vehicles, attended the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, said Mousseau.
