DIDSBURY - Five people were hospitalized yesterday after a rollover on Highway 2 near the Carstairs overpass.

“Didsbury RCMP are on scene of a serious traffic collision following reports of road rage by a white truck passing vehicles,” said police in a press release issued at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.

At 4:10 pm, police say a suspect vehicle, described only as a white truck, overtook a family SUV, breaking aggressively in front of them.

“The SUV lost contact with the road surface while attempting to avoid a rear end collision with the suspect vehicle,” police said.

The suspect truck and family SUV were both travelling southbound on Highway 2, approximately two kilometres south of the Highway 581 overpass near Carstairs. The SUV reportedly rolled through the median ditch before coming to rest along the fence.

“As a result of the SUV rolling, one child under five years of age was ejected from the vehicle and is in life-threatening condition, having been flown by STARS Air Ambulance to hospital. The four other occupants, two children and two adults are also in serious condition and were transported by ground ambulance to area hospital. The suspect vehicle did not remain,” police said in the press release.

Highway 2 travel, northbound and southbound, was restricted south of Highway 581 to one lane of travel in either direction. Traffic was expected to be disrupted for several hours while police investigated.

Emergency medical services along with the RCMP collision analyst were in attendance. Motorists were asked to seek alternate routes.
