CREMONA - Council has approved awarding the contract for the pump station piping upgrade project in the village.

The move came by way of motion at the recent, regularly scheduled council meeting.

The low bid submitted for the project of $132,903 by Balzer Canada Inc. of Calgary was selected.

“The project involves a new header for the emergency pump including a flow meter and new valves to control flow for the truck fill header,” administration said in a briefing note to council.

“The project also involves programming upgrades so that the emergency pump can be shut off remotely, eliminating the need to have an operator come down to the pump station and manually shut off the pump.”

The tender for the project was closed on Dec. 1 and awarded on Dec. 20.

The upgrade will have several benefits to the municipality, council heard.

“Currently the flow from the emergency pump is not metered. Installing a new flow meter for the emergency flow header will help operators with their reporting to Alberta Environment.

“The emergency pump has a tendency to turn on whenever the truck fill is used. Programming for this project will prevent the emergency pump from operating when someone is using the truck fill.”

The village’s stormwater management plan includes a recommendation that the pump station be upgraded.

In other news from the recent council meeting, members approved a business licence application by KCS Animal Rescue Society to operate at 213 Railway Avenue E., a rescue housing for dogs and cats that have been victims of violence.

The non-project organization intends to foster animals until they can be adopted out.

“This will help with the strays within the village that are left to fend for themselves in our cold winter.”

Council has also approved funding for the municipal library for 2023.

Administration recommended that the same amount of funding provided in 2022 be given in 2023.

“Council has reviewed the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework with Mountain View County, shared facility, sub-sub-agreement, and has approved to continue the previous support payment to the Cremona Library, that being $2,500.”

Council has also instructed chief administrative officer Karen O’Connor to “seek out security cameras cost for the hardware and installation for the village entities, then bring them back to council.”
