Update: Serious multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2 east of Carstairs this morning

CARSTAIRS - Southbound lanes on Highway 2 that were closed due to a serious multi-vehicle collision this morning east of Carstairs are now open, according to a recent update by Alberta 511.

The traveller information service operated by the provincial government posted an update on social media at about 1:56 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.

One northbound lane remains closed, according to the post.

"Expect delays due to traffic volume," the Alberta 511 post stated.

Lanes on Highway 2 east of Carstairs were closed after police say a serious multi-vehicle collision occurred this morning.

Police say the collision occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27 on Highway 2 at the junction of Highway 581.

At this time, RCMP estimate that there were 25-30 vehicles involved.

One driver was transported by ground ambulance with unknown injuries, police said.

Northbound lanes of Highway 2 were closed and southbound traffic had been reduced to one lane, police said in a release issued at 11:48 a.m.

Airdrie Rural RCMP, and emergency medical services are currently on scene.

"RCMP is encouraging motorists to avoid travel in this area," police stated in the release.

Alberta 511 advises that road conditions are icy in the area and to drive with caution.
