Suspect dies following confrontation with local police

A man was shot and killed following a confrontation with local police last night that resulted in the injury of a police dog.

COLD LAKE - A man was shot and killed following a confrontation with police last night that resulted in the injury of a police dog. 

At approximately 6:50 p.m. yesterday, Cold Lake RCMP responded to a report of a dispute in a vehicle in the area of Ardmore. 

Officers began searching for the male suspect who is from the Cold Lake-area. 

Cold Lake RCMP officers and RCMP Police Dog Services tracked the suspect who had fled on foot. 

A confrontation occurred between police and the suspect. An officer discharged their firearm and the male sustained life-threatening injuries.

Despite officers' efforts to provide medical assistance, he died as a result of his injuries. 

During the incident, a police dog was injured and transported to a vet clinic for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

No other officers were hurt during the incident. 

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will be investigating the incident and "the circumstances surrounding the actions of the police during the investigation" an RCMP media release states.
