Athabasca RCMP were involved in a confrontation that left a Calling Lake man dead after he called 911 multiple times saying he wanted a confrontation with police, according to an RCMP press release received Sept. 20. File

CALLING LAKE — One man is dead after confronting Athabasca RCMP in Calling Lake. 

According to an RCMP press release received Sept. 20, Athabasca RCMP received multiple 911 calls the night before at approximately 11:15 p.m., from a 51-year-old Calling Lake man who was requesting police presence and commenting that he wanted to engage members in a shootout. 

Athabasca RCMP members arrived at the residence and located the male who exited the residence. An interaction then occurred between the man and the RCMP members, before he returned inside. The area was contained by the RCMP, and the Emergency Response Team was contacted to attend the scene. 

According to the statement, the man then exited the residence again at an undisclosed time and confronted RCMP members on the street which led to an officer discharging their service firearm at approximately 1:32 a.m. 

Emergency medical services was called and efforts were made to provide first aid, however the man died on scene. No one else was injured. 

The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the actions of the police.   

The RCMP will continue to investigate the actions of the man and the events leading up to the confrontation.
