SUNDRE — Cloudy skies and a little bit of drizzling rain was not enough to put a damper on the local modified Canada Day ceremony.

Hosted at the Sundre & District Museum’s historical pioneer village, the annual service was substantially reduced this year, featuring only the flag raising and singing of the anthem, a rendition performed by Jennifer Day.

Mayor Terry Leslie and Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre MLA Jason Nixon attended, alongside Sundre & District Historical Society director Jane Atkins as well as members of the Royal Canadian Legion Sundre branch 23 and officers from the local RCMP detachment.

Without prepared speeches, the delegates took a few brief moments to express gratitude to those who gathered in honour of Canada’s birthday.

“In these trying times, thank you to everyone who has come out to celebrate, and happy Canada Day to everyone,” said Leslie.

More than a dozen people attended the event — including Chad Williams, from Kelowna, who brought his children along to visit family — and following the short service, they had the opportunity to explore the historical village as well as the museum and World of Wildlife.
