SUNDRE — The Mountainview Taekwondo Club kicked back into gear last week when classes resumed at the Sundre Community Centre.
Although the last class was held this past April, for some of the club’s students, it had been about 18 months since they’d had a chance to join a class, said instructor Cherie Johnson, who alongside fellow instructor Wade Johnson has assumed a greater leadership role.
Master Terri Miller, who founded the club more than 25 years ago, will continue to serve as master instructor, but in a reduced capacity.
However, Miller still intends to occasionally participate in classes to assist with training and conducting belt testing as well as providing mentorship and support to the instructors to ensure they continue to grow and progress.
"Taekwondo has been a huge part of my life,” said Miller. “This partnership will allow me to transition to the next phase and be confident that the club is in good hands.”
So, Miller decided to pass the torch down to the main instructors, Wade and Cherie Johnson, both members of the club who have been active for more than 13 years.
Last Monday, Sept. 20 was the first day of classes.
“We have many new students and are really excited to get back into the gym and train as some of us instructors haven't been together in 18 months,” said Johnson.
The club currently has five instructors and about 30 students who train at the community centre’s gym every Monday and Thursday evening.
“We offer three classes for ages five and over from beginner to advanced,” she said.
Due to the temporary pandemic restrictions, the club is unable to register adult students, she added.
